Drivers caught using mobiles at wheel

Passengers should stop drivers using mobile phones at the wheel to help combat the number of motorists who continue to flout the law, say police.

They made the call after revealing they issued fines to 1,336 drivers in Leicestershire in 2008 and have already dished out 387 since January of this year, an average of 32 a week.

If that rate was to continue throughout 2009, the total for the year would be more than 1,500 – more than ever before. See all stories on this topic
