News content over mobile phones surged by up to 60% during the turbulent Songkran festival, according to Advanced Info Service (AIS).
The country's largest mobile operator said subscriptions for SMS news items from agencies, for television news on mobile phones and for news through WAP sites climbed 30-60% during the water festival.
The figures clearly show that news services on mobile phones met the demands of customers, particularly while they were travelling, said AIS.
The company added that SMS and MMS traffic was high, at a typical festival figure of 20% over normal traffic.
Second-ranked operator DTAC saw its SMS (short messaging service messages) over the three-day holiday ending April 15 rise 35% to 25 million messages, up from 18.5 million last year.
Its SMS traffic averaged 8.33 million messages a day, more than double the 3.9 million messages in a normal period.
The number of MMS (multimedia messaging service messages) rose by 11% to 370,000 messages.
The company said political turmoil over Songkran had pushed up SMS volume by prompting customers to send more messages to people they care about.
Piroon Paireepairit, director of multimedia services of True Corporation, said mobile traffic over the Songkran festival from April 10-15 was stimulated not only by the festival itself but also by political unrest.
True did not record its traffic during the festival. But over 800,000 of its users subscribe to free SMS news on mobiles. They received an average of three news items a day during the festival, he said.
