Although a mobile phone is considered an essential gadget by most people, research from Fonebank found that over a third wanted simplicity.

The mobile phone recycling company said of the 1,000 people who took part in its recent survey, three-quarters believed current handsets are less reliable and robust. While many are initially swayed by all the functions bundled into a phone, the survey found many are rarely used.
For example, although the average age of the respondents was between 18 and 35, inbuilt cameras and MP3 players are considered superfluous by 30 per cent and 45 per cent respectively.

Fonebank found that nearly half of people said they tend to use their mobiles almost exclusively for making and receiving calls and texts.

Mark Harrison, Fonebank’s director said: “People think they care about pixels or megabits when in fact they just want mobiles that are easy to use. Calling and texting remain the primary functions of mobiles, with web surfing, emailing and music capabilities relatively unimportant.”

However, he did say that despite a lack of enthusiasm for some of the 'whistles' and 'bells', mobiles have fundamentally changed the way people use other gadgets.

"Many people feel lost without their mobile, using it as a personal assistant or even a replacement for their alarm clock or watch," said Mr Harrison.

India bans mobiles without 'code'

Cheap mobile handsets without the code and imported primarily from China and Taiwan are popular in India.

Over 25 million such handsets are now in use in India, according to the federal telecom ministry.

Last year, Indian intelligence agencies had said phones without the code were being used by terrorist groups in attacks in the country.

Time-consuming

The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a 15-digit code which appears on the operator's network whenever a call is made.

The absence of this number makes it impossible to trace either the caller or the phone. It is also makes it impossible to get call details for these handsets.

Orders to detect handsets without the identification numbers were issued last year but some mobile phone operators asked for more time to identify these phones.

They said the time and software required to identify these phones was time-consuming.

Priced between $60 and $120, the cheap handsets have a big market among rural and semi-urban consumers who want connectivity at cheaper cost.

There are over 380 million mobile phone users in India.

The president of the Indian Cellular Association, Pankaj Mohandroo, has been campaigning against Chinese-made phones for years.

He called the government announcement as a "partial solution" saying the problem of millions of handsets in circulation has not been tackled.

"We have demanded immediate disconnection of services to such mobile phones but that has not happened," he observed.

The government has ordered that no new connections be provided to such handsets.

India has also announced a partial ban on the import of Chinese toys that do not meet international standards until January 2010.

Spice Corp Ltd., a leading Indian telecommunications company, showcased at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the world's cheapest handset, dubbed the "People's Phone".

This new device comes without a display and it's clearly targeted for those who only want to make phone calls and do not care for other features. The People's Phone is "just a phone", similar to a landline phone in functionality but having the advantage of being mobile and using GMS networks. The device will retail for a price of less than 20 USD (about 12 Euro) and its producer hopes to sell millions of units in India (plus other Asian markets) after its launching, planned for March 2008. The handset will also come with low calling rates, making it perfect for new low-budget mobile subscribers that come from small towns and rural areas.
Another affordable device presented by Spice is the Braille Phone, which looks exactly like the People's Phone but it's specially created for users who suffer from severe visual impairment. The handset's keys have braille numbers on them instead of "painted" numbers, enabling blind persons to make phone calls with ease. The Braille Phone comes for the same price of less than $20. Besides the two basic phones, Spice also presented the Movie Phone, being the first mobile phone that can play movies on a disc. Reliance Communications of India had announced plans to introduce potentially the world cheapest internet-enabled mobile phone at $12 and they are targeting to sell 1 million handsets a year. I wonder why only 1 million when its $12?? Surely India has a much bigger market than that right?
They are currently in advanced stages of discussions with leading contract manufacturers in China, Taiwan and Korea for sourcing the prototype of the low-cost internett-enabled mobile phone. The company intends to place an initial order for 12 million handsets. It will target the 600 million rural population and sell around 1 million pieces a year in the rural and semi-urban areas.
At that price, i would recommend them to bundle the phone with the service. Why bother trying to sell at $12. As its, most providers worldwide are giving away free phones bundled with their mobile services. At $12 a piece, the return of investment (ROI) should be fast.

Lifeline: 1.4 million Americans recieving free or very cheap mobile service

Lifeline is a service that you would not be proud to tell someone you’re a part of. You need to fit within certain criteria the federal government has set for you to be labeled “low income” or qualify for social services. Around 90% of Americans have a mobile phone according to Nielsen, which may sound like a lot, but penetration rates in many European countries have exceeded 100% (more than one phone per person) for quite a long time. That leaves 32 million Americans without a mobile phone.
No one is questioning the need to stay connected and I hope the people who are against government funded mobile access come to the realization that being connected to the world is just as important as clean water and free education. The number of people using Lifeline has doubled since November 2008 and is now around 1.4 million and it works by operators receiving a $10 per month government subsidy for providing 68 minutes a month of talk time. Tracfone, a company based out of Florida that has a successful prepaid business, provides the handsets and operators like AT&T (NYSE: T), Sprint (NYSE: S) and T-Mobile (NYSE: DT) are supporting the Lifeline initiative.
There is currently a debate as to whether or not the government subsidy should be applied for wireless service, which again, is tied to the old line of thinking that a mobile phone is equated to having a luxury item.

It’s been a busy day for Samsung - they’ve gone official with not only the Jet and Omnia Pro, but also this Omnia Pro variant (B7320). Opposed to its side-sliding sibling, the B7320 features a BlackBerry (NSDQ: RIMM)-style QWERTY keypad, but presumably similar specs. The only things they’ll tell us right now is that it has a 3 megapixel camera, FM tuner supporting RDS, and Wi-Fi. That definitely looks like a front-facing video conferencing camera, too.

The fourth and final phone announced by Samsung today is the Omnia Lite (9B7300). So far, they’re only telling us that the B7300 packs TouchWiz 2.0, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, aGPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and comes preloaded with Opera and the Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) Office Suite. The B7300 had snuck out back in March, but not much was revealed then either. Luckily Unwired View dug up a few more specs:

The images come via AndroidForums where a user posted them. Apparently the snaps were taken by someone that was handed the phone by someone at Google (NSDQ: GOOG).

ISLAMABAD: The government has withdrawn the regulatory duty on mobile phone sets and reduced the Customs duty on the sets from Rs 500 to Rs 250 per mobile phone. According to budget documents, the government had provided relief to companies wishing to invest in the telecommunication sector. Excise duty on mobile phone sets has been reduced at a rate ranging between 19 to 21 percent and SIM activation charges have been decreased from Rs 500 to Rs 250.

Cellular telephones have become very popular with professionals and consumers as a way to communicate while away from their regular, wire-based phone, creating a niche for software makers to meet demands (and create new ones). The large investment by Amazon.com, buying a 7% stake in GeoWorks – a California company that makes software for cellular phones, shows how the market has attracted different companies4.
Batteries and Chargers
Mobile telephones use radio waves to send and receive calls, this makes a portable battery a necessity – and the cell phone must include a power source. Rechargeable batteries provide the usual source of power, but most cell phones can also be attached to the cigarette lighter in a vehicle or to some other external power device.
Although the idea of radiant energy has been around not long after the discovery of electricity, new changes of “radiant energy” and advanced uses of lithium-ion batteries are gaining ground in the industrial market:
“Michael Faraday found in the 1830s that changing a magnetic field induces an electrical current in a nearby wire”; “one of the first patents registered in the 1890s by Nikola Tesla, one of Edison’s former assistants, was for “radiant energy”1.
Argonne scientists stated in the 211th meeting of The Electrochemical Society, Argonne scientists said they have adapted the ability to stabilize and increase capacity of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries by using an active component5.

Various news quotes show how much the industry has grown and is expected to grow:
Accessories maker Parrot figures that while only one in six cell-phone sales now results in an accessory purchase; by 2011 the number of sales will rise to one in three. "That means that it's going to be a tug of war for accessories," says Edward Valdez, U.S. president of Parrot (company).
Best Buy late last year launched five specialty stores in New York focused exclusively on selling phones and related accessories. "Once people get used to the idea of the phones not being just for calling, they'll buy other things," says John Zittrauer, sales lead at Best Buy Mobile in Union Square in Manhattan[1].
In addition to foreign purchases of communication equipments and parts, six million cell phones and accessories will be domestically produced for Iran’s mobile phone industry, noted here on Monday, the Minister of Industries and Mines Alireza Tahmasbi2.
“With China having almost double the number of cellular subscribers we are having to shift more attention towards providing international competition”, states CEO of ANYTHINGFORMYCELL.COM: China currently has 380 million subscribers and expects another 250 million by 2010[2].

Covers and Skins
The newest trend in cell phone accessories are skins and design covers.
These decals can be made of hard plastic or in the newer market adhesive-backed vinyl pieces. These vinyl skins can be ordered on many websites and come pre-cut to fit your cell phone or even another electronic device. There exist two different types of vinyl material, calendared or cast, with the latter being more expensive. In short, calendared vinyl is expected to only be used for short durations while cast vinyl is used on a more long term basis. Calendared vinyl also tends to shrink in the heat, and fade in color. On the other hand, cast vinyl can cure all of these problems, yet costs up to 250% more (which still is a very cheap total cost). While the technology of these adhesive-backed skins continues to improve, the most up to date technology comes from 3M. The company has manufactured a cast vinyl product that they call "Controltac". This vinyl cover maintains a more glossy look and provides an air release channel that prevents bubbles during placement.

Cell phones may become costlier in Maharashtra

The Maharashtra Government's proposal to raise the value-added-tax (VAT) from 4 per cent to12.5 per cent on the sale of mobile handsets has caused panic in the mobile phone market in the State. The proposal was made last week during the ongoing budget session of the State Assembly.Though the final decision on the proposal is yet to be made, there's a growing fear among the retail industry that the move to hike VAT will decline the legal sale of handsets and could lead to grey marketing. And this will naturally have a negative impact on the tax revenue front too.According to Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO of Retailers Association of India (RAI), this decision is unfortunate for Maharashtra state and also for the general public."If the rest of India is having 4 per cent VAT and if Maharashtra is imposing 12.5 per cent on mobile phones, then the public will not buy the genuine mobile handsets with IMEI number from local market or retail stores. They will buy the phones from other states or ask their relatives or friends to buy for them from other places," Rajagopalan told CyberMedia News."It will create situation that existed about 4-5 years back, where about 90 per cent of the mobile market was grey and only about 10 per cent was official. And again, it will encourage grey marketing in the state as mobile phone costs will rise with hike in VAT," Rajagopalan said.He said this will affect the market revenue and the customers opting for the grey market will not get benefits like service support or product warranty and other benefits."Why can't we have an equitable sales tax structure across India? MGM Finds Mobiles of Healthcare Personnel Cause Contamination

Mobile phones have become indispensable devices and restriction is not a practical solution, but a study of the flora harboured by mobile phones of healthcare personnel has shown that it is a deadly source of bacterial contamination.
The study was conducted by MGM Medical College and New Bombay Hospital, Navi Mumbai. The study was displayed at the 10th National Conference of the Hospital Infection Society, India, held in Pune recently. According to researcher Dr Chitra Pai, professor from MGM College, "Mobile phones are seldom cleaned by healthcare workers in spite of its use on a continuous basis. Hence, we decided to screen mobile phones of various categories of healthcare personnel for the presence of microbes." The research team took swabs from the phones of 120 healthcare personnel, including doctors, lab technicians, nurses and ward boys. Wireless carriers can expect to retain the flow of revenue in advertisements because Juniper Research says the recession may have no impact on advertising via cell phones.

The latest report from the market research firm says advertising on mobile channels will “buck the downward trend” and may exhibit stronger growth over the next five years.

As businesses across the world started to cut costs in an effort to safeguard their balance sheet, they increasingly chose cost-effective ways to advertise. As a result, the mobile phones started to get more ads.

Yet, the researcher says, the amount of money that telecom operators get from advertisers is relatively small in size and mobile ads will account for just 1.5 percent of total money spent on advertisements globally until the end of 2014.

One in eight Brits are leaving their mobiles on charge even when the battery is full, which amounts to 85,000 tonnes of excess CO2 being produced every year, says Moneysupermarket.com.
Research by the comparison website revealed that teenagers are the worst offenders with nearly half of all under 20s admitting to charging their handset for an average of 7.3 hours a time.
Moneysupermarket.com said overcharging mobiles adds £40m to electricity bills each year.
James Parker, manager of mobiles at moneysupermarket.com, said: "There have been some great advances in green technology from mobile manufacturers recently but all that goes out the window when people are overcharging mobiles - wasting energy and driving up their utility bills."
Parker urged consumers to only charge their handsets for up to four hours at a time and invest in an eco-charger that stops drawing power once the battery is full.
"The average phone only takes about 2-3 hours to charge up and overcharging can actually be damaging to the battery life. People should remember to unplug the phone charger when they are done; it will not only be good for the phone's battery life, but good for their wallet too."

Mathematicians and scientific advisers from Oxford University have helped develop a price comparison website for mobile phone users.
BillMonitor has become the first mobile phone comparison site to be accredited by the communications regulator Ofcom.
The UK mobile market offers consumers more than three million deals on over 119,078 tariffs.
The site is financed by commissions on its recommendations and only takes account of some of the deals on offer.
Consumers supply details of their bills and the website analyses them for a tailored recommendation.
"Science has been put to work for struggling consumers in a free service to help them lower their bills," said Stelios Koundouros, co-founder of BillMonitor.

Ofcom had previously accredited two price comparison websites (covering broadband and digital television), but accepts that there are a number of websites that had not applied for accreditation.
The watchdog Consumer Focus is investigating the state of the mobile phone market after 100,000 complaints were made about services in the last two years.
"The love affair with mobile phones is turning sour. Tariffs are complex and public confidence in the service providers is low," said Ed Mayo, Consumer Focus chief executive.
"Mobile phones are not a luxury but now an essential service and need to be treated as such. Missing out, paying over the odds or being given the run around by companies should no longer be acceptable."

Shock as number of mobiles in jails rises

HUNDREDS of mobile phones used to organise serious crime from behind bars were seized from North prisons last year, new Government figures reveal.

The numbers, from the Ministry of Justice, show a huge leap over the past 12 months, with 304 phones or SIM cards being discovered, compared with 169 the year before . . . an 80 per cent increase.

Colin Moses, chairman of the Prison Officers Association, said: “These phones are used by people in prison to keep businesses going, to set up drug deals, or sometimes even to intimidate witnesses.”

Mr Moses – who worked at several prisons in the region before taking up his present position – said the news was worrying and that prisons should do more to stop phones being used.

He told the Sunday Sun: “It is a massive problem and I’m not surprised at all to see this kind of increase.

“It’s a combination of better methods of finding them, but there are also definitely a lot more phones to be found. There needs to be measures taken to block mobile phone use inside prisons . . . the technology is there.”

The Government admits that the numbers may be underestimated, with some phones not being sent for proper analysis by officers, or used as evidence, and therefore not counted.

Officers at Kirklevington Prison in Teesside discovered 78 phones in 2008, compared with 24 the year before. At Holme House, also in Teesside, 53 phones were found and, in Frankland Prison in County Durham, 41 were seized.

The phones are either smuggled into the prisons by visitors or sometimes thrown over prison walls for criminals to pick up.

Justice Minister David Hanson said: “It’s a criminal offence to have a mobile phone in a prison . . . they are a threat to security and public safety.

“The Government is committed to stopping mobile phones and SIM cards from entering prisons, and to finding and disrupting any which are smuggled in. These seizures demonstrate that commitment, as well as the effectiveness of prison security and intelligence, work.

“We have already introduced a range of new technology to bolster prisons’ ability to find mobile phones and SIM cards, including body scanning chairs.

“In addition, the Government has strengthened the law around this, meaning that someone convicted of bringing a mobile phone or its components into a prison now faces up to two years in jail.”

A boon or a curse--Mobile phones in Manipur

Imphal| May 10: Recent reports of the misuse of mobile phones by certain individuals or groups in the state of Manipur have left certain questions to be answered as to whether the mobile phones are a boon or a curse in the state. Certain features such as being ‘mobile’, handy and available almost ‘24x7’, a larger majority of the people would feel the boon. However, a critical analysis and study into recent reports of mobile phones being misused could speak otherwise.
Mobile phones made its first appearance in the state in 2004 with the launch of BSNL services by the centre. Since then many private cell phone companies like AIRCEL, AIRTEL, Reliance and the recently Tata Indicom and Vodafone have made its way into the state thus providing more choices to the users. However, the use of SIMs under fictitious names has been a concern for security in the state with the increasing number of mobile phone related crimes and extortions.
However, the misuse of mobile phones came to its peak in the second half of 2008 when a series of monetary demands and threats were made through the mobile phones in the state to various individuals and officials including organisations and institutions. The headmistress of Don Bosco School, Langjing in Imphal West revealed to the media that she had received monetary demands and threats through an SMS and this demand eventually led to the closure of three Don Bosco Schools of Langjing and Pheiyeng in Imphal West and Don Bosco of Chingmeirong, Imphal East. They were however re-opened few days later having come to a negotiation with civil societies.
Following such incidents, city police under the Home department of the state began to hunt for “Black SIM” as a security measure and in a span of about two days captured over 200 such SIM cards.
As per reports, a state police officer informed this drive was launched after the police found out that individuals had bought the BSNL and other private company SIM cards and then sold them in black to other, adding this was a cause of concern for the security of the state.
L. Kailun, Senior Superintendent Imphal West district police was also reported to have informed that the high number of SIM cards in black was the main problem leading to the problem of insurgency control in the state. “The SIM cards in black were leading to the problems of insurgency control. So we came up with this policy of collecting mobile phones,” the reports quoted the SP as saying.
This drive was further fuelled by the recovery of 18 (eighteen) mobiles from the militants under trial at the Sajiwa jail in Imphal East in October last which one could perhaps termed as a prove of the various allegations that mobiles were being use to threaten and extort money from the government officials and the general public alike.
Th. Radheshyam, the Superintendent of Imphal East district police is reported to have informed the media the raid began on October 10 and in a span of just about two days collected 18 mobile phones from the various under trial militant inmates in the jail. Most of these militants belonged to the various state based outfits such of the Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council (KCP-MC), Kuki Revolutionary Army-United (KRA-U) and People’s United Liberation Front (PULF) involved in extortions and monetary demands and that they were conducting their programmes through the phones from the jail, stated reports as per information deliver by the Imphal East SP.
And with the recovery of the mobiles from the militant inmates of the Sajiwa jail, speculations spread that threats, extortions and demands through the mobile would decrease. However, the misuse of mobile phones emerged in the early part of 2009 when state based militant outfit apprehended few couples for recording their ‘immoral acts’ and circulating it through the phones. Following this initiative, civil societies and local bodies began to keep an eye on such acts especially amongst the youth.
Reports had it locals in Imphal West district torn down a house which was allegedly rent out for ‘immoral act’ where couple recorded such deeds. This falls in great contrast to the moral value that the state observes.
No doubt, the mobile phone has all the requisites for a good entertainment viz. the MP3 players, video recording and playbacks, cameras and Bluetooth for easy transfer of files between mobiles. One cannot leave behind the availability in times of emergency and keeping in contact with near and dear ones, near and far. However, the recent reports of the misuse of the mobile phone have raised few questions if it is boon or a curse to the state.

Envirofone Collects 40,000 Old Mobile Phones in 3 Months

During the last 3 months, Envirofone has collected about 40,000 old mobile phones, according to organizers. The recycling initiative has also collected 23 tons of other electronic waste. Envirofone is a collection scheme for mobile phones and other waste in the nation. It is sponsored by etisalat, a telecom giant, in an attempt to take harmful substances out of communities.

During the UAE National Environment Day on February 4th, etisalat pledged they would give Dh5 million to the initiative, which gave Envirofone a boost. Last year the initiative collected 200,000 mobile phones, as well as 52 tons of electronic waste across the UAE. Besides old mobile phones, many people still keep other gadgets that they don’t use anymore, and they either discard them or recycle them.

Stuart Fleming, the managing director at Enviroserve, the company that oversees Envirofone, said that 3 million mobile phones, at least, could be in consumers’ homes, waiting to be recycled. One person who turned in their old mobiles had 22 that they weren’t using anymore, he continued. It is clear that they are going ahead of efforts last year with more awareness of needing to be socially responsible, Fleming added.

As an incentive to get more people to recycle their old electronics, etisalat is offering rewards every month. Aside from rewards, they are also giving part of the money that they get from the recycled materials to charity. They have installed 450 deposit boxes for mobile phones at key areas in the UAE in order to facilitate this process. Fleming said that accessibility is the key to making recycling the easy option for consumers.

Don't let your old phone go to waste

TECHNOLOGY moves at such a rate that mobile phones rapidly go out of style.

So it is no surprise that over the years millions of unwanted mobiles have been discarded in the UK.

But not everyone realises that when mobiles are dumped, they are often burned, which releases toxic chemicals into the atmosphere.

Mobiles also contribute to the thousands of tonnes of non-biodegradable waste that goes to UK landfill sites every year.

Empty printer cartridges can also be reused — but many of them are also disposed of as normal waste.

Both mobile phones and printer cartridges can be recycled for reuse, thus reducing the environmental burden on landfill sites and offsetting some of the energy consumed in their manufacture.

Devon legal firm Slee Blackwell, which has an office in Queen Street, Exeter, is encouraging people to give it their old mobile phones and printer cartridges to raise money for charity.

The phones can be handed into the reception areas of all five offices, where they are sent to Recycle for Charity.

The not-for-profit company then recycles the phones and cartridges. It keeps some of the money to keep itself going and sends the balance the Devon Community Foundation.

John Hasson, an associate solicitor at Slee Blackwell's Queen Street office, said: "I had heard of some other charities doing it and I am a keen believer that you should do what you can for the environment and every little bit that you do helps. It also helps raise awareness.

"At the same time, we became aware of the Devon Community Foundation, and its Grassroots Challenge means any money it raises is matched by equal funding from the Government.

"I think people are more likely to take part in something if they think it is going to benefit local communities."

Slee Blackwell started collecting phones in January and hopes to run the scheme until September.

John said: "From what I understand, the recycling company says any phone can be recycled — different makes generally fetch different amounts.

"They can be worth £50, or some can be as little as £2.50."

He said the scheme was part of Slee Blackwell's general commitment to be eco-friendly.

"As a firm, we are very conscious of the environment and cut down on the amount of consumables we have," he said. "We try to cut down on paper and to use electronic communications as much as possible."

Once sent to the recycling company, the mobile phones are stripped down for reusable components and precious metals such as gold and platinum are taken out of them.

John said: "There are an awful lot of precious metals in there and a lot of the components can be reused, so less mining needs to take place.

BALASORE: It seems the heatwave has also taken mobile phones in its grip. A number of mobile phones in the coastal district of Balasore has been staying out of service during afternoons leaving a message on the screen ‘paused by temperature’. The phones are restored to their normal condition once they are placed in an air conditioned room.The problem is seen with all mobile service providers including BSNL, Reliance, Airtel, Aircel and Vodafone. Many customers have also complained that during the ‘paused’ period, they are neven ot able to see the stored numbers.Sources said, for the last one week, temperature in the city has been hovering between 37 and 40 degree Celsius.Abinash Das, a mobile repairing mechanic, said this usually occurs to mobile phone sets whose batteries are old as these cannot tolerate excess temperature.General Manager of BSNL, Balasore telecom district, S Adak said, he had not received any complaints in this regard. ‘‘It may be a problem in the handset but not in the service
